Any parent of multiple kids will tell you how different their personalities can be. Even if the nature and the nurture of these kids are seemingly the same, a third power must be at play. And that’s especially true for the Garner-Affleck family.
Jennifer Garner opened up about her three kids — daughters Violet, 18, Seraphina, 14, and son Samuel, 11 who she shares with ex-husband Ben Affleck — in an interview with Dr. Aliza Pressman on Raising Good Humans. She admitted that Violet and Seraphina are more than your average level of different.
Each New Years’ Eve, she explained, she gathers her kiddos and they brainstorm their resolutions, goals, and hopes for the year. “We write down something we want to let go of, something we want to manifest, etc,” she said. And though she said she gives them privacy during this annual tradition, something about it got her thinking about her daughters’ temperaments – which are, apparently, night and day.
“Their personal mission statements and value statements were as if they had never met,” the actress said.
What About JGar’s Hopes?
Though she wouldn’t reveal her kids’ exact hopes, the 13 Going On 30 star got incredibly candid about her wishes for them. While most parents hope for their kids to be happy, healthy, fulfilled, loved, yada, yada, yada, Garner had a different dream. (Along with those other mainstream wishes, we’re sure.) She told Dr. Pressman she desperately wanted her kids to have a sense of humor.
“Funny is number one. Please be funny, that’s why I had you,” she joked.
After growing up with parents who are known for their comedic roles, we weren’t surprised to hear that wish came true.
“Check, check, check,” Garner said of her three t(w)eens. “That’s one thing, thank god!”
And Her Fears?
Last week, Garner told Thrillist her “biggest fear” when it comes to her kids. And it’s bigger than them flubbing a punch line.
“My travel is always so carefully orchestrated,” Garner said “I’m always landing and skating right into a kid’s performance or bedtime. So my biggest fear is delays that could get in the way of making it to something for my kids.”
She’s likely shaken not only by the FOMO, but by the thought that they might think she doesn’t want to be there for them, spend time with them, and support them. Given her work, last-minute travel changes, and her co-parenting schedule with Affleck and his wife Jennifer Lopez, delays are bound to happen.
“But those are part of life,” she conceded.
And so are sisters who have totally different temperaments.
