Shawn Johnson Posted a Video of Daughter Drew Trying a New Skill & People Have Big Feelings About It

It was a big weekend for Shawn Johnson’s daughter Drew. The 4-year-old worked hard learning something new with her dad Andrew East, and the adorable video is giving people some big feelings.

The Olympic gold medalist shared a video of East teaching Drew how to ride a bike, filmed from a security camera over the driveway. It starts with words of encouragement. “First thing we need is a positive attitude,” he tells their little girl. “Say, ‘Yes, we can!’”

Drew responds loudly, “Yes, we can!” Super adorable!

Later, the camera cuts to Drew on her bike, with East walking behind her with his hand on the handlebars. “Yes, you can, Drew! Yes, you can” he coaches as Drew pedals her feet. Meanwhile, her 2-year-old brother Jett comes from the side, riding his bike like a pro, clearly not afraid of anything.

Falling Down

When Drew inevitably falls off her bike, East is right there. He catches her immediately, then crouches down to talk to her. “I’m right here,” he says. She responds, “I want you to hold me.”

“I will,” he says, then encourages her to try again. She finally gets it, pedaling the bike by herself, and his excitement is contagious.

“Drew! Let’s go!” he yells, then gives her a hug. “You did it!” he says, before she falls off her bike again.

Johnson wrote over the sweet video, “my daughter learning how to ride a bike 😭😭.” She added in the caption, “My heart 😭.”

Bike Safety

Some people were upset about the video for an actually legitimate reason: neither Drew nor Jett were wearing helmets.

“Kids need helmets!” one person wrote. “No helmets? Come on guys. Their brains are so vulnerable,” another said.

This is actually really good advice. According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, per John Hopkins, wearing a bicycle has been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. Those numbers are huge — and since accidents can happen on a bike trail, the neighborhood sidewalks, or your driveway, kids should put on a helmet before they get on a bike every single time.

Daddy’s Girl

Others were feeling emotional for a different reason: seeing how sweet East was with his daughter. “Here I am, barely pregnant with my very first baby, bawling my eyes out at this 😭😭😭 Praise God for wonderful dads and parents who love to parent,” one person said.

“’I want you to hold me’ KILLLLLLLED ME. And then I extra died when he said ‘I will!!’” another wrote.

“Oh my gosh, this is so wholesome and sweet!” someone else said.

Back in October, a baby monitor caught another sweet moment between East and Drew. He told her, “I need you to stop growing up. Alright? What am I going to do when you’re not my baby girl?”

She sweetly responded, “I’ll still — I’ll love you so, so much.” Are you crying yet?

The former NFL player then told his daughter, “I’m just — I’m getting a little scared,” and she responded by saying, “It’s OK” and giving him a big hug. What a sweet daddy’s girl!
