Meghan Trainor Shares Her Refreshingly Normal Plans for Son Riley’s 3rd Birthday

Extravagant birthday celebrations with tons of people (see: any of the Kardashians’ parties) are not feasible for most of us. Whatever happened to pizza and cake and letting kids run loose in the backyard? Well, it turns out, Meghan Trainor is all about those simple birthday parties, too! She revealed how she wants to mark her son Riley turning 3 next month, and it sounds refreshingly low-key.

Birthday Plans

The “Made You Look” singer shared that she wants to avoid potential exposure to sickness and just have a casual party at home for Riley. “Every time I want to try to plan something, I’m always like, ‘Eh, germs and people, and I don’t want to … He’s not going to remember this one yet,’” Trainor told PEOPLE.

Honestly, same! Two of my kids were born in February, and with the rise of flu and COVID cases (not to mention RSV and rotavirus) around the country, I feel just as hesitant about having big celebrations too. And my “big celebrations” aren’t even comparable to what a celebrity might throw. So the fact that Trainor also seems to be going easy on the party plans is nice!

And while Riley may not care if tons of people come over to celebrate him or just a few close friends and family, he is particular about one thing: the cake he wants.

Cake

“I do know that for a cake, he really wants it to be a car, a cake car,” the “Mother” singer told the outlet. But not just any cake car — one that looks like his parents’ car. “And it has to be specific. It has to be our white car that we have. So I am literally hiring this amazing cake creator to make our Rivian car into a cake,” Trainor explained.

“I was like, ‘What about Lightning McQueen car?’ And he was like, ‘No, white car,'” she added with a laugh. Toddlers have opinions too, and when they want something, oh boy are they relentless. Don’t worry, the cake can still be cute, though. Just look at Olivia Munn’s trash truck cake for her 2-year-old son Malcolm!

Best Friends

Trainor shares Riley and son Barry, 6 months, with husband Daryl Sabara. Last week, the Dear Future Mama author shared adorable family photos, and it proved how alike her two boys are.

“I love this little life @darylsabara ❤️” she captioned the photos, including several of her red-headed little cuties. In one, the little boys are snuggling together in their pajamas, and it’s too sweet.

In her interview with PEOPLE, Trainor also shared how close her two boys are. “He loves him,” she said about Riley and Barry. “And Barry doesn’t have this reaction with anyone else, but when Riley’s over him and smiling at him, Barry freaks out and starts laughing and looks at him already like, ‘You’re my hero.’ I’m like, ‘I wish Barry looked at me like that!’ He’s obsessed with Riley.”

So cute! As long as Riley has his best friend Barry at his party — and his white car cake — it’s going to be perfect.
