Lenny Kravitz has celebrated many successes in his lifetime, but his proudest win might just be one outside of his storied music career.
The rockstar shares his only daughter, actress Zoë Kravitz, with Cosby Show alum Lisa Bonet. A year after the pair married in 1987, they welcomed The Batman star. The former couple ultimately divorced in 1993 after five years of marriage, but their love and respect for one another never disappeared from their dynamic — not even when they were first navigating how to co-parent.
Letting Love Rule
While chatting with Peoplefor his Black History Month cover story, the “Fly Away” singer shared the key choices he and Bonet made to remain amicable co-parents. “I’m very proud of not only how Zoë came out, but how we did it,” Lenny began. “We did it without lawyers and all that madness. We did it as a family, with love.”
The entertainment multi-hyphenate added, “We did it with understanding and being able to handle our own business without getting others involved. That is what Let Love Rule is,” he said of his debut album, which was heavily inspired by Bonet. “It’s when you remove ego and all of the other elements and do what you’re supposed to do.”
It wasn’t an easy road to travel — the musician emphasized that it “took time, believe me,” to find harmony in his co-parenting relationship with the actress. “But we wanted to have that, and to this day we still do,” Lenny concluded.
The Shotgun Wedding actor previously spoke about his co-parenting dynamic with Bonet in 2020. “It’s essential [that we remain close],” he told People. “We have a child, and we love each other just as much as before — it’s just a different situation,” Lenny explained. “It takes time, work, and dedication, but that is something that the two of us had.”
Embracing a Blended Family Dynamic
The same year, the rocker opened up about his friendship with Bonet’s now ex-husband, Jason Momoa — a choice the two dads made to honor the “let love rule” philosophy. “People can’t believe how tight Jason and I are, or how tight I still am with Zoë’s mom, how we all relate,” Lenny told Men’s Health. “We just do it because that’s what you do. You let love rule, right?”
Even after Bonet and Momoa decided to amicably separate after nearly two decades together, the “American Woman” singer told People that they’re still all family. “We’re family, we will be family,” Lenny said, adding, “It’s all good. We will continue, life will continue, love will continue.”
The musician also shared a very cool tidbit about Bonet and Momoa’s two kids, teenagers Lola and Nokoa-Wolf. “I’m very proud that their kids call me Uncle Lenny,” Lenny said. “We’re all extremely close and share a lot of love.”
