Kate Hudson Gives a Sweet Insight into Parenting Her Adult Son Ryder & a ‘Wild Discovery’ She Made

In parenting, things are constantly evolving. Your kids are never-ending mysteries that change and grow and challenge you in new, fun ways forever — and yes, that includes into their adult years. Kate Hudson is reflecting on what it’s like to parent her eldest son Ryder now that he’s an adult, and she shared one “wild discovery” she made about the whole thing.

Ryder Is Getting Older

The 44-year-old told PEOPLE on Wednesday that she was “only a couple years older” than her son is now when she got pregnant with him. “That’s been the wild discovery for me,” the Almost Famous star said. “I just can’t believe that I was only a couple years older than him when I decided to have a child.”

“The fact that we’ve been able to get through it together like this, and really, honestly, grow up together, has been incredible,” Hudson, who shares the 20-year-old with ex Chris Robinson, continued.

Growing Up With Ryder

Hudson, who is also mom to Bingham, 12, with ex Matt Bellamy, and Rani, 5, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa, opened up about her special relationship with Ryder in a Nov. 2022 interview with The Sunday Times.

“I’m definitely more present as a mother now that I’m older,” she told the outlet. “With Ryder, our relationship is so special because I grew up with him.”

“The big learning period of my life and becoming a woman happened as I was being a mother,” the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star continued. Hudson added, “Raising kids is not an easy thing to do. You try to raise them well and hope they make good, solid decisions.”

And while you’re raising your kids, you can lose track of everything else. “I guess while raising him, [I was] just in it and present, and then they fly the nest, and they’re sort of cooked — and they’re adults!” the “Talk About Love” singer told PEOPLE in Wednesday’s article. “You look back going, ‘Wow, I can’t believe [it].’”

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

Ryder is currently going to college at New York University with Reese Witherspoon’s son Deacon Phillippe, and Hudson said he is doing “so wonderful,” is “in a great place,” and is “enjoying his life.” What more can you hope for as a mom?

Well, there is one thing … “I wish he lived a little closer,” she told PEOPLE. “But I just love seeing him explore his adulthood. He’s an adult, you know? He’s out in the world and doing his thing. … We’re very close and I’m very proud.”

The California native opened up about missing her son in a Dec. 2022 interview with TODAY. “It’s so hard,” Hudson said. “All you want is your kid to thrive and be happy. But, man, when I’m in LA, and I go to the coffee machine in the morning, and I don’t hear his voice, it’s a big one.”

Parenting is a rollercoaster of emotions, and if you think it gets easier when your kids grow up, Kate Hudson is here to prove that it doesn’t — at least, not when it comes to the emotional aspect of having kids.
