Serena Williams doesn’t just listen to her 6-year-old daughter Olympia — she involves her in business decisions, too! The Olympic gold medalist revealed that she works with her eldest daughter to “conceptualize” business projects, making Olympia an official Girl Boss before she’s even left elementary school!
In an interview for PEOPLE’s 50th Anniversary Issue, Williams said that her life has “been really hectic” since retiring from tennis, welcoming 8-month-old daughter Adira, and running all her business ventures.
“I’m starting to sweat a little bit more because now Adira recognizes me and she wants to come to me, and that honestly is so sweet and so cute. But then my other daughter Olympia, she’s six and she still wants a ton of attention. … But, I love it,” Williams, who shares Olympia and Adira with husband Alexis Ohanian, told the outlet. And like the GOAT she is, she added, “I’ve always loved a challenge, I’ve never steered away from hard work.”
One thing that keeps her motivated to work hard right now is Olympia. “It’s also fun to show your daughter as you’re creating products and say, ‘What do you think about this? Do you like this name?’” the Wyn Beauty founder continued. “And then literally have her say, ‘I like that name better than this.’ It’s something that’s really cool, to really conceptualize together.”
What a fantastic way to empower your child! Olympia is going to grow up expecting people to take her ideas seriously with such a fierce leader for a mom.
Earlier this month, Williams opened up about how she wants her daughters to think of her career. “I want my daughters to look at my career and learn that being authentic to themselves is really the most important thing,” she told Byrdie. “You don’t have to be the best as long as you do your best. I also hope my daughters see how many different passions I have — from tennis to beauty — and learn that they can lead dynamic careers and lives across their many interests.”
Now, Olympia is starting to get more interested in Williams’ fame. “Olympia’s now at an age where she’s like, ‘Listen, I am wondering, why are you so famous?’ She was like, ‘You’re a great tennis player,’ Williams told PEOPLE. “And so I told her the other day that she actually was in my belly when I won a big tournament [the 2017 Australian Open] and she was surprised. She’s at an age now where I can kind of open up to her a little bit more.”
When looking toward the future, Williams admitted that her list of things to do next “never ends.” She said, “Now, I really want to grow into this entrepreneur that I’ve actually been doing for the past 25 years. I’ve always been in this space, but actually focusing on my businesses and focusing on growing not only my brand, but different brands and working with different founders as a venture capitalist.”
“But I think the very next thing on my list is just to be a good mom,” Williams added. Well, she can go ahead and check that off, because she has nailed it!
