Prince William is dropping more and more details about the lives and personalities of each of his kids — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 6. At his recent engagement talking to young boys about male mental health, he said that he was asked to “produce a dad joke.”
“I was trying to channel Jack Whitehall because most of his jokes are pretty dad-like,” he said, a nod to the yearslong back and forth he’s had with the British comedian. (More on that later, but it’s a bit of a Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon situation … but with fewer f-bombs.)
When nothing came immediately to mind, he decided to tell what he said is “Charlotte’s favorite joke at the moment.” It’s one she — like many kids who latch onto a joke — keeps telling him.
“Knock knock,” the Prince of Wales said.
“Who’s there?” the boys in attendance asked.
“Interrupting cow.”
“Interrupting co—” “MOO!” Prince William said, cutting off the boys. Get it?!
If you haven’t heard the joke before, it’s a total classic, and we love to hear that the sassiest member of the royal family appreciates the simple perfection of that timeless knock-knock joke.
Whitehall (told you we’d get back to him) shared a video on Instagram where he reacted to the Prince of Wales’ joke, scoffing at the interrupting cow before taking notes. “An outrageous shading from the future King,” Whitehall captioned his post, adding #theregoesmyknighthood.
Whitehall and Wales have had a cheeky relationship since at least 2014 when Whitehall — who went to school with Kate Middleton — joked that the Princess of Wales was “the one who got away.” Then there was the time Whitehall was invited to do a private show at Kensington Palace and was “set up to fail.”
“There was no stage, there was no microphone, I literally had to perform in front of all of them like the court jester,” he said, per People.
“I did a load of jokes about going to school with Kate Middleton … I made some jokes about Prince Harry being very brave in Afghanistan because a ginger in that climate was really running a lot of risks,” he recalled. “It was awful, all of that material, and none of it barely even raised a teeter.”
If only he had known to go for the knock-knock jokes. Maybe if he teaches Princess Charlotte some new ones that make her laugh, he can get his knighthood back.
