Serena Williams has an inadvertent reminder for parents and caregivers that has us all breathing a sigh of relief. The legendary tennis player posted on X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend saying she was listening to ’90s slow jams. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday!
“… and ummmmm I just heard the lyrics to ‘Too Close’ by Next for the first time…” she said. “I guess I just heard nothin but the beat before lol. 😂”
Because the song — which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998 — leaves little to the imagination. After all, “I wonder if she could tell I’m hard right now” is quite a way to start. But Williams didn’t pick up on that as a teen.
“Baby, when we’re grindin’, I get so excited/Ooh how I like it, I try but I can’t fight it,” the song goes. “Oh, you’re dancin’ real close, ‘plus it’s real, real slow/You’re makin’ it hard for me … You’re dancing like you’re naked/Ooh, it’s almost like we’re sexing.”
There was all of that … but the 23-time Grand Slam champion only heard the beat.
It’s a nice reminder for parents that if their kids hear a risque song or a joke that’s clearly meant for adults on one of their cartoons — it will likely go right over their heads. It won’t be until nearly three decades later on a random Saturday that they realize what they were humming along to all those years ago. Most of us probably have a similar story about a song we’ve heard a million times, but only really understood with the benefit of age and experience.
Williams shares kids Olympia, 6 and baby Adira with husband Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit. She recently shared her postpartum workout routine, and looked radiant preparing for “that hot girl summer body.”
“Water aerobics is a great way to add some fun to your workouts,” she said on Instagram.
This time last year, Williams was announcing her pregnancy with Adira on the Met Gala red carpet. “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” Williams cheekily captioned a carousel of photos of her and Ohanian where she proudly showed off her bump. Now we have to know — will there be any surprises from the Williams-Ohanian family on the carpet tonight?!
