If you thought having one child would prepare you for having another one, then I have some bad news. Maybe your brain can only hold so much information at a time — or maybe it’s a survival mechanism so humans will continue to procreate. Either way, you’ll probably forget everything you learned about parenting during babyhood by the time your second (and third, and fourth) child comes along. Drew Scott did! He candidly admitted to forgetting his “tricks and little techniques” that he mastered when his son Parker, 2, was first born, and now he’s a little nervous about welcoming baby number two with wife Linda Phan.
“We’ve just been in planning mode,” the Property Brothers host told PEOPLE recently. “The funny thing is Parker, they’ll be about two years apart, so Parker will be 2, but I’m already forgetting. … I had little tricks and little techniques and things for changing diapers efficiently and for feeding. I’m forgetting all of it.”
Scott continued, “So I think it’s going to be like a crash course again, as soon as I get into it, to figure it out. But the main thing is Linda’s such a rockstar mom and she pours so much love into Parker and the family, and I try to do the same.”
As someone whose been there with my second and third babies, I totally get it! There were times my husband and I would be up in the middle of the night scrolling through our camera rolls to try to find a picture or video of a swaddling technique that used to help our babies stay asleep. Or checking my phone notes to remember how long I would go in between breastfeeding. It’s hard to see through that new parenthood fog when you’re in it — and almost impossible to look back once you’ve made it to the other side!
The good news is, you’ll figure it out again. And it might console you to know that since not all babies are the same, the tricks you previously used might not have worked anyway!
The silver lining for Scott is seeing how Parker reacts to another sibling. “I just am really excited to see Parker as an older brother,” he told PEOPLE. We are, too!
For now, Parker is keeping Scott busy. The Backed by the Bros star shared a video of himself on Instagram today with this point-of-view: “POV: Trying to organize with a toddler running around.”
The clip begins with Scott holding a basket and a pile of kids’ books, which he tries to neatly put away on his built-in bookshelves. Then Scott impersonates Parker in red footsie pajamas, trailing after his dad just to knock the books on the floor. Scott puts the basket up, Scott-as-Parker immediately knocks it down. He rearranges the messed-up cookbooks, Scott-as-Parker pulls them off the shelf. Rinse and repeat until you lose your mind!
“*deep breaths* #ParentingBeLike #parenthood,” Scott captioned the post.
If an HGTV home renovation star can’t keep his house organized with one toddler running around, it makes us feel a lot better about the state of our own homes! Things may be chaotic now, but welcoming a new baby will just bring so much more love into the house. Scott and Phan are going to do great!
