Shawn Johnson’s Daughter Drew Loves a Cool Sport Her Mom Knows ‘Zero’ About

She may be an Olympic gold medalist, but that doesn’t make Shawn Johnson the expert on all sports. Her 4-year-old daughter Drew has recently shown interest in a cool new sport, and Johnson is every mom trying to catch up!

The retired gymnast shared a video of her daughter standing on the benches while watching hockey. She raises her arms out to the sides and points her toe, channeling her inner figure skater! She moves side to side on the bleachers, looking graceful as she raises her arms. “Ice skating. It’s her THING,” Johnson captioned the post on her Instagram story. “It’s so fun to see her little personality come out.”

Johnson shared another video, this time of Drew trying to do a big spin on the carpet. “We were watching to (sic) big girls do spins so she wanted to,” Johnson explained. Drew runs out on the carpet in the lobby, twirling with her arms circled in front of her before she falls straight on her butt. Like a pro, she gets up and does the twirl spin again, this time landing it. She’s all set for the winter Olympics!

As for Johnson and her former NFL player husband Andrew East — well, let’s just say they are doing their best. Johnson shared a picture of East tying the laces on Drew’s white skates, admitting, “I know literally ZERO about this sport hahahahaha.”

“We are trying hard to learn for her!” Johnson added.

While Drew may love ice skating, she is also in gymnastics. The Family Made Media founder told E! Newsin Oct. 2023 that Drew is doing “a little gymnastics class and she loves it. It’s really sweet.”

But Johnson and East are more focused on finding what Drew (and their sons Jett, 2, and Bear, 6 months) enjoy the most. “I have a lot of friends who will say, ‘Oh, is my daughter good? Do I need to be putting her in X, Y and Z?'” the athlete continued. “And I always tell them, ‘The greatest chances of success with any kid is for a kid to love what they do.’ Because a lot of times the people who make the Olympics aren’t the best and most talented. They’ve just loved it enough to work through every hurdle that has come their way.”

“The more a kid loves it, the more effort they’re willing to put in. So just put them in everything and find what sticks,” she added. And if what sticks is something you know nothing about, that’s OK! You can learn along the way just like any mom, Olympian or not.
