Beyoncé is the closest we have to American royalty, but at home, Queen Bey is just a working mom. In a rare new interview, the Grammy winner opened up about juggling her career and parenting her kids Blue Ivy, 12, and twins Rumi and Sir, 7, who she shares with husband Jay-Z. And even though she is world famous, we feel seen!
The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer is the October cover star of GQ, where she admitted that being a working mom is full of “beauty and chaos.” “Most days I try to wake up around 6 a.m., squeezing in an hour or two of work before the little ones are up,” she told the outlet. (We’re going to need a whole other article on how to get them to sleep in that late, BTW!) “Parenting while working, I move forward, embracing the beauty and the chaos of it all,” she added.
Beyoncé also shared a peek into what her home life is like, which is as wild and free as her music makes us feel. “Our home is alive with cousins and friends, spontaneous talent shows, and the clatter of dominoes,” she described. She added that on top of everything else, she’s been “trying to focus on my health” by taking supplements and eating clean. “I’m trying to muster the strength to work out, but I just can’t do it today. Maybe tomorrow. Haaaa!” she added. It’s like she can read my mind, because that’s exactly how I feel most days!
The singer and business owner (who recently launched hair care brand Cécred and whiskey brand SirDavis) gave more details on how she balances everything.
“I build my work schedule around my family,” the “Crazy In Love” singer explained, adding that she tries her best to “only tour when my kids are out of school.” She said, “I always dreamt of a life where I could see the world with my family and expose them to different languages, architecture, and lifestyles.”
Sounds beautiful! But it’s not without its challenges. “Raising three kids isn’t easy,” Beyoncé continued. “The older they get, the more they become their own individuals with unique needs, hobbies, and social lives.” You would think that as your kids get older, things would be easier, and in a way it is. You get more sleep for one! But when they develop their own little personalities and interests in schedules, it’s harder in a different way.
Still, she loves being a mom. “My twins are God-sent,” she added. “Parenting constantly teaches you about yourself. It takes a lot of prayer and patience. I love it. It’s grounding and fulfilling.”
One way Beyoncé mixes her professional and personal lives is by bringing her kids with her “everywhere.” “They come to my office after school, and they are in the studio with me,” she said. “They are in dance rehearsals. It’s natural that they would learn my choreography.”
And Blue has even performed with her mama on stage, clearly taking after her entertainer gene. The proud mama shared that her eldest daughter “is an artist” with “great taste in music and fashion.” “She is a fantastic editor, painter, and actress,” the “Single Ladies” singer said, adding that Blue “has been creating characters since she was three.”
“She’s a natural, but I did not want Blue onstage. Blue wanted it for herself,” Beyoncé continued. “She took it seriously and she earned it. And most importantly, she had fun! We all watched her grow more and more every night before our eyes.”
This echoes what Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles has recently revealed about her grandkids. She told E! Newslast month that all three kids are “all artists.” “How could they not?” she asked.
Knowles added, “Rumi is a little star, and Sir is more into books and electronics.” Blue, on the other hand, loves playing the piano. Knowles said she was “blown away” by the pre-teen. “She’s self-taught and she sounds like a concert pianist. She paints, she draws, she does poetry. She’s just an artistic soul,” Knowles said. “I’m really, really proud of her. I can’t wait ’til the world gets to really hear.”
The kids come by their talent organically; after all, Beyoncé thinks singing is as natural as breathing. “It’s one of the deepest joys of my life, a necessity as vital as breath,” she told GQ. “Without singing, without music, without creating, I would be a walking dead. Creating music isn’t work for me; it’s what I was born to do.”
