Baby shower and registry checklist

Baby gear

Baby car seat: You’ll need to decide if you want to use a baby carrier with a car base or a standard car seat. Many carriers are part of a “travel system” that includes the car base and sometimes a compatible stroller. If you choose a standard car seat, look for a convertible model that can face toward the rear (for infants through 12 months) and the front. This gives you more bang for your buck. If your travel system doesn’t include a stroller, don’t forget to register for one. Check to see that your baby carrier is compatible.

One to try: The Graco Stylus Travel System includes an infant carrier, car base and stroller. Once your infant outgrows the baby carrier, she’ll still be able to use the stroller well into toddlerhood. The Baby Trend Jogger Travel System-Magnum handles rough terrain while you work off the baby weight.

Baby carriers: Baby-wearing is a great way to keep your little one close while keeping your hands free to clean the house or push a stroller.

One to try: DivaBabe Couture’s line of ring-sling and Mei Tai baby carriers are made with beautiful silks and prints. Some are even 100 percent organic. All are designed to encourage and support breastfeeding, help new moms to be fashionable, boost postpartum self-esteem and promote positive body image.

Cribs: Many moms keep their babies in their rooms at first for easier feeding in the middle of the night and to build a sense of closeness. A bassinet or co-sleeping system can be used until Baby moves to her own crib.

Some to try: The Stokke Sleepi Crib sleeping system converts from bassinet to crib to toddler bed to two chairs! If you’re interested in co-sleeping, try the Mini Co-Sleeper Bassinet from Arm’s Reach. This co-sleeper bassinet attaches securely to the side of an adult bed to provide a secure sleeping environment for Baby while keeping her close. To reduce the risk of SIDS, the Guardian Sleeper is a one-piece cover that’s positioned to keep the baby on her back.
