Raising a physically fit kid
Teens needn’t be in a competitive circuit or teach courses to be fit. There are plenty of things that families can do to focus on fitness. Mom Marla B. Levie works out with her daughters. “We took
out a membership at our local park district health club and all work out together. I also bought equipment at home, and we do exercises in my bedroom with the music or TV playing and use certain
workout routines that are given to me by my personal trainer,” says Levie. “Since athletics are so big at the high schools for both boys and girls, I stress to my kids that when they are older, it
won’t matter if they can play soccer or softball; they will stay fit by joining a gym and the benefit will be that they will meet so many people that way.”
Five ways to get your teen moving
- Take a bike ride. Riding bikes is great for cardiovascular health … and if your kids really enjoy it, consider joining a biking group or taking a biking vacation. It could be a great family
adventure. - Go hiking. Check out the American Hiking Society for ideas on how to get your family started with hiking and finding good trails in
your area. - Swim. Swimming promotes rhythmic breathing and cardio vascular fitness. See if your community has an indoor pool available for use.
- Take an after dinner walk. Sure, the kids might resist at first, but walking together can promote bonding and encourage discussions.
- Play a game. There are a number of physical games out there these days like Wii Active and DDR. Do something your kids enjoy (playing games) and get them moving all at once. Win-win!
