Ages 13 and up
Entertaining teenagers is no easy task. Look for games that involve strategy or debate to keep your teens interested from start to finish.
Sequence – The object of this strategic game is to get a sequence of five chips on the playing board. Two to 12 people can play this game; play with more than three players and you’ll be teaming up. To make it even more fun, teammates aren’t allowed to speak to each other or interact.
Catch Phrase– This electronic guessing game provides hours of fun for the whole families. This electronic game is hot potato and Taboo combined in one high-paced, hilarious game. Teamates try to guess the phrase before the timer goes. Once they get the correct answer, the game is passed to the next team, hopefully before the buzzer sounds.
Clue – Ah, Clue. How could we not inlcude this mystery game. The amount of focus and strategy involved definitely lends the game to older players. A round of this classic game can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. There are many variations of the game including a junior version, Harry Potter edition and Clue The Office edition. OK, maybe we slipped that last one in for the parents!
Apples to Apples – Apples to Apples is an award-winning card game where four to 10 players are dealt noun cards and must match them up with the judge’s adjective cards – often causing big laughs. It takes less than 5 minutes to learn. Although it’s marked as ages 12 and older, we think this game is best for older teens as some of the topics are a little too obscure for pre-teens and young teens. Apples to Apples Junior is available for children ages 9 and up, and there is also an Apples to Apples Jewish Edition!
Scrabble Slam – Hasbro has released several card games that turn classic games like Scrabble into fast moving fun. This is a high-paced word game that’s excellent for enhancing children’s reading skills (It involves changing words into new words by adding a new letter, i.e., slap becomes slam by changing the final letter). This is perfect for when you are short on time.
