15 Back to school tips for moms

The long, lazy days of summer are getting shorter, and summer vacations are concluding as suitcases filled with summer memories are replaced with backpacks stuffed with shiny new pencils, notebooks and other school supplies. Here are 15 tips to ease the transition from summer to school.

Back to school: Organization makes life easier

Create a family calendar.

Place a dedicated family event calendar to track after-school activities, special school programs, homework due dates and volunteer work in an area of your home so that everyone can see and add to it.

Organize outfits.

Lay out clothes the night before, fold shirts so the design is easily recognizable and use dedicated hampers for dirty laundry to ensure there’s no early morning meltdowns as a result of “nothing to wear.”

Label it.

Label things like jackets, backpacks and water bottles with your child’s name so that they’re easily identified in the event they find their way into the school’s lost and found.

Pack lunches and backpacks the night before.

Besides lunch and homework, be sure the backpacks have all the necessary items such as signed permission slips, filled-out information cards, a change of clothes, book orders, etc.

Work out a weekly menu plan.

Create a menu plan for lunches and dinners so that you’ll always have an answer to the question, “What’s for dinner?” Try to pack lunches the night before to minimize early morning stress.

Learn to speed clean.

Keeping an organized home when it’s time to go back to school can be challenging with the time crunch. Learn to speed clean before the schedule gets hectic so that you’ll be a pro when all the activities kick into high gear.
