Back to school: Preparing for the transition
The lazy days of summer are brought to a decisive halt as the first day of school alarm rings. Try these tricks to make the transition smoother.
Ease into the sleep schedule.
During the last two weeks of summer, re-introduce a school year bedtime. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they’ll need to rise when school begins.
Get a healthy start.
Schedule doctor and dental checkups early and discuss any concerns you have with your pediatrician. Be sure that all immunizations are documented and up to date.
Take a tour.
It’s important for children to know what to expect on that first day, so take a tour of the new classroom and meet with the teacher beforehand.
Talk about it.
Start the conversation about what to expect this upcoming school year, what things to be excited about and what kinds of changes your children might see. Keep the conversation open and positive to help build confidence for that first day.
