Back to school: Shopping on a budget
|
From the super-long lists of school supplies to school outfits and uniforms, heading back to school can easily blow the budget. Check out these savvy mom tips on how to save this back to school season.
Don’t shop too early.
Get just a few of the basics before the first day, then wait a few weeks after school starts to buy more when popular items (such as supplies and trendy shoes) are typically on sale and you have a better idea of what your child needs.
Stick to the list.
Avoid buying unnecessary items that are not on the teacher’s supply list. Sure, that shiny new binder looks fun and you may think there will be a use for it; if it’s not on the list, though, the teacher probably has other plans. Don’t buy it.
Buy in bulk.
As with so many other items, buying in bulk is usually a huge money saver. Things that you might be able to buy once and have throughout the school year (or split the cost with a friend) include pencils, notebooks, folders, printer paper and folders.
Stay within the dress code.
Some styles are simply not acceptable according to school dress codes, so be sure to buy only the things kids can actually wear to school. Buy any other other things when they are on clearance.
Stock up.
When the school year begins, many of the items in demand tend to go on sale. You should be able to pick up items such as school supplies, khaki and blue shorts, polo shirts, jeans and sneakers at significant savings a couple of weeks into the school year.
Make it a great year by entering this season armed with tips that can turn any mom into a back to school shopping pro.
