The First Years American Red Cross Cabinet Swing Locks recalled

Learning Curve Brands has issued a voluntary recall of 41,300 units of The First Years American Red Cross Cabinet Swing Locks. Keep reading to determine whether your cabinet locks are a part of the recall and if so, what you need to do.

Recalled item

Learning Curve Brands Inc., doing business as The First Years, has issued a voluntary recall of 41,300 The First Years American Red Cross Cabinet Swing Locks.

The Cabinet Swing Locks were sold at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, other retail locations and online between September 2008 and September 2010. The retail price was approximately $4 per package.

The item number of the recalled latches is Y7181. The date code of the recalled latches ends in FUL00.

The recall notice gives the following detailed description of the latches. Use this information to determine whether your latches are part of the recall:

“The latches are mounted on cabinets or drawers to help prevent young children from gaining access and were sold two per blister card. An America Red Cross logo and ‘cabinet swing lock’ is printed on the package. ‘American Red Cross’ is molded onto the front of the lock. A date code is printed on the bottom of the back of the package and on the back side of each latch just above the connection point.”

Reason for recall

Learning Curve brands voluntarily issued the recall in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because the latch can break, rendering the latches useless. That obviously means that your little one can access cabinets and the contents.

The CPSC received seven reports of broken latches. It did not receive any reports of injuries associated with the broken latches.

What should you do

The USPSC advises consumers to immediately remove the latches from their cabinets. You should obviously take precautions to remove hazardous or dangerous items from the cabinets until you can replace the latches.

There is a date code on the back of each latch that you need to take note of before contacting The First Years. You will be provided with a $5 coupon that you can use to purchase other Learning Curve products. You can request your coupon with a simple online form.
