Monday Mom challenge: Address your health issues

Moms are notorious for putting themselves last. We spend so much energy taking care of kids and spouses and homes and jobs that there seems to be absolutely no time left for ourselves. Yes, this can be framed as a good thing, a selfless thing — but it can also be a not-so-good thing. We need to take care of ourselves to continue to be there for taking care of the kids and the hubby and all that. We need to pay attention to ourselves and our health so we’ll be there for the long run.

Health is no small thing, though it’s something we don’t often fully appreciate until there’s a health challenge. You likely wouldn’t go years without a regular check-up for your kids — though you hardly think twice about it for yourself. But proper preventive care and maintenance for you, just as for your kids, is key to staying healthy. Address the little things before they become big things and get the big picture on your health — before there’s a crisis.

Preventive care

Just like you do for your kids, get regular checkups and all preventive screening. When you make the annual physical appointment for your child, make one for yourself — and keep the appointment. If your of the age that you need regular mammography or other screening, choose a yearly event and get the screening every year on or around that event. It doesn’t have to be your birthday, but a birthday is a handy reminder.

Lingering issues

Many moms have one or two annoying little things going on that they are reticent to have checked out: a mole here, a chronic ache there. Don’t let them linger — get them checked out! Chances are it’s nothing, but wouldn’t it be better to have that confirmed or have a treatment plan rather than saying to yourself for months on end, “I really should check that out?” And if it’s something, the earlier you catch it, the better.

An integrated whole

You may find that in the process of paying attention to your health, issues are related and there is a greater, whole-body approach you can take to your health and well-being. Perhaps as part of your efforts, you discover alternative treatments that make a real difference in your health and outlook. This is a good thing! This is getting your health in order for the long term.

Your kids need you healthy

When it’s so hard to find the time to take care of yourself, you may feel that you are somehow being selfish about that time. Really, however, it’s just another way you are being selfless and caring for your family. Your family doesn’t just need you — they need you healthy and available.

Taking care of yourself is also a positive example for your kids. They learn about self-care by watching you, so don’t let them down.

Make the appointments now

Don’t delay any longer. This year, make your health a priority. Call and make the appointments now…and keep them. Do it for yourself and do it for your family.
