President’s Day is coming up and your kids are probably off from school. Do you have plans for the day? These day-trips are a perfect way to spend President’s Day this year.
Our country may not be as old as European nations, but we are a land rich with history. This President’s Day, why not take your children on a fun day trip to learn more about that history. Not only will they learn something, but they will also have a chance to connect with our country’s past.

Mount Vernon estate
George Washington was our first president and his home is now a museum for all to see. If you are looking for a meaningful way to spend President’s Day, a trip to Mount Vernon estate could be the perfect activity. There will be a wreath laying ceremony, military demonstrations and more. And best of all? Admission is free on President’s Day. It’s located just south of Washington D.C.
Lincoln’s Home
Abraham Lincoln only owned one home before being elected President. His Springfield, Illinois, home is now a National Historic Site that you can visit. Admission is free — but on a first-come, first-serve basis — and tours last about 25 minutes. This year, the National Park Service is also honoring Lincoln’s Inaugural Journey to the White House — it’s the 150th anniversary! — with a series of events.
Hyde Park, New york
If you are in the New York area, a trip to Hyde Park is a great excursion. Home to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, his mansion is open to the public for tours, and Eleanor Roosevelt’s cottage, Val-Kill, is nearby. While you are there, the Vanderbilt mansion is another fabulous mansion to visit. You can grab a bite at the renowned Culinary Institute of America.
National Constitution Center
Live near Philadelphia? Then a trip to the National Constitution Center is perfect for President’s Day. It’s an interactive history museum devoted to the country’s most important political document: The Constitution. It’s located just blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, so hit those spots too!
Closer to home?
If you don’t live on the East Coast, don’t worry. There is still plenty to do to celebrate President’s Day in a meaningful way. Check your local newspaper for President’s Day activities, as well as the museums and monuments in major nearby cities. Still stumped? Ask your child’s school for any tips on events that could be a great day trip.
