How to make a cell phone cover

Your cell phone makes a statement about you. If you’re tired of having a phone that looks like everyone else’s, make a sparkly cell phone cover that will set yours apart.

This easy craft from HGTV.com promises fun family time and fabulous results!

What you need

  • Metal cell phone faceplate
  • Blank paper
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Crystal beads
  • Scrap paper
  • crochet hook
  • Soft lip balm

Steps

  1. Buy a durable metal faceplate, ideally made by your phone manufacturer so the fit is perfect. Select a color close to the background of your crystal design because a little will show through.
  2. Determine a pattern. Drawing small circles the size of your crystals, sketch patterns (floral, geometric, etc.) of the design you wish to create. Draw the circles in staggered rows and not in an exact grid one on top of the other.
  3. Use markers to fill in the tiny circles with the colors you like.
  4. Once you’ve settled on a design, wrap the paper around the phone cover to gauge whether or not it’s big enough. Plan to have more design than you think you’ll need and continue it beyond phone cover’s borders just to be sure you don’t run out.
  5. Decide on a starting point. Fold the paper design over in that spot as your baseline, and work from left to right in rows to glue the crystals, starting on the edge of the phone cover.
  6. Place a small dab of glue on a piece of scrap paper. Dab the point of the crochet hook into the glue, and stick it on the phone cover at your starting point.
  7. Dab the other end of your stick in lip balm. Use this waxy end to pick up a crystal and place it on the spot of glue you put on your phone cover. Continue this process as you move along the edge of your phone cover.
  8. Then, starting back at the top corner, do the next row. Make sure to stagger the crystals so the pattern is tightly interlaced and not much of the background color below shows through. Repeat until finished.
