Today’s toys are often high-tech, elaborately designed and expensive. Although modern toys and games can be exciting, get back to basics this holiday season with fabulously fun toys that have been around for decades. Check out some of our favorite classic toys that are still manufactured today.
Lincoln Logs
Fortunately, Lincoln Logs have remained almost the same over the years. The notched wooden logs can be used to create cabins, trading posts and a lot more. Generation after generation, kids love these simple construction toys. The classic edition 86-piece set of Lincoln Logs (Walmart, $35) is a great bargain.
Etch A Sketch
While most of us can create a face and maybe a house on an Etch A Sketch, some kids can make masterpieces. The Etch A Sketch (Amazon Prime, $15) is a simple toy that children of all ages (and their parents) can enjoy. These days, they come in different sizes, colors and designs, though the classic version is still the most popular.
Lite Brite
The original Lite Brite has been replaced with the Lite Brite Cube (Amazon Prime, $47) as well as an array of colorful, smaller flat screen versions. While we still prefer the classic edition, the cube is cool because four kids can share the unit at once. In addition to buying the paper templates, you also can create your own templates on the Hasbro website and print them out.
Barbie
If tattooed Barbie isn’t your style, don’t worry. They still make the unrealistically proportioned blonde without ink. You can purchase a reproduction of the original 1959 teenage fashion model Barbie doll (Amazon Prime, $44) in her famous black and white bathing suit. You can also still find all Barbie’s iconic accessories, from her Corvette to her Dream House.
Easy-Bake Oven
Hasbro released he first Easy-Bake Oven in 1963 in all of its turquoise plastic glory. For decades, girls were baking cakes with their light bulb-powered ovens. Over the years, the look of the oven changed drastically and pretty soon, it resembled a microwave. Though the current Easy-Bake Oven (Toys “R” Us, $40) sn’t anything like the original — it doesn’t use a light bulb anymore — it’s still a little nostalgic.
Big Wheel
Video games have their place, but sometimes you want your little ones to get outside and get active. In a flashback from the ’70s, you can purchase for your child an original Big Wheel and they’ll be cruisin’ around the block. You can also find the pink and purple girls’ version, the “spin-out” edition with the hand brake and other options. The Original Big Wheel (Target, $50) is still the most popular.
