We live in a digital age with blogging, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube available to everyone for free. Motherhood and the digital world have become more and more merged. Becoming a digital mom has never been easier! How can you become one? Find out!
When I first started blogging in 2005, nobody knew what blogging was, at least not any of my family and friends. Whenever I told someone I was a blogger, they immediately asked me, “What’s a blog?” So I just started telling people that I was chronicling my daily life online — a digital journal. It was the easiest way to explain it.
Fast forward six years, and it’s tough to find anyone who doesn’t know what a blog is. Even my father-in-law reads them! In all honesty, you won’t find many people who haven’t heard of Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, either. We’re officially in a digital age, and being a professional blogger, I couldn’t feel more excited or more proud.
I’m excited to be writing this column for SheKnows each week called Being a digital mom because I am one and I’m very passionate to teach other moms how to become digital moms, too. I support my whole family through my blog, Mom Generations, and also through projects that have come from my blog, so to me, it’s very personal.
When my husband was laid off in September of 2010, I had to step up and really start providing for my family. The digital world was my vehicle to do this and I just went full speed ahead, not looking back once! I became so passionate about the topic of being a digital mom that I co-wrote a Harper Collins business book, The Digital Mom Handbook, with fellow mom blogger Colleen Padilla of ClassyMommy.com. It was released this past July. In it, we share all of our advice and tips as to how to become one.
The one question I am asked the most by moms is, “How do I start a blog?” My immediate answer is always, “Just do it!” But I do know it’s a little bit more complicated than that.
Here is my immediate advice to moms looking to get started in blogging:
1.
2.
3.
These are the three steps you need to do to get your feet off the ground. Each week, I’ll be sharing more advice and tips as to how to become a digital mom, and also sharing ways in which to turn your blog into a business. If you have any questions for me, please leave them in the comments and I’ll be sure to answer them.
