January is here, and that means it’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions. This year, don’t strive for an unrealistic goal about diet or fitness. Instead, make some lifestyle changes that will really make a difference for your health and well-being. Check out some of our top New Year’s resolutions for moms.
Learn to say no
Even though you are supermom, you can’t be everything to everyone all the time. Reduce your stress and stop overscheduling yourself (and your kids). Say no to events, activities and other pressures that really don’t mean that much you. This will allow you to have plenty of time to do things that you really care about. Also, carve out some time for yourself each and every day. Even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning to meditate or read the newspaper before the kids wake up.
Unplug more often
We all love technology, but sometimes it makes us too connected. Make it a habit to avoid using your smartphone, iPad, computer and other gadgets every night between dinnertime and bedtime. You’ll be surprised how much more quality time you’ll have available for your hubby and your kids.
Make changes
We aren’t talking about weight loss goals, but rather healthy lifestyle changes.
- If you smoke (or drink excessively), stop.
- If you missed your mammogram appointment, call and reschedule.
- If you rarely exercise, start taking walks.
- If eat fried/fast food too often, start learning new cooking methods.
Take time to schedule your annual physical right now. Healthy behaviors, eating more natural foods and incorporating fitness into your everyday routine will lead to wonderful changes in your life.

Give back
Giving back can be very rewarding. Make a difference in the lives of those in need by helping the less fortunate in your community. There are hundreds of ways you (and your family) can contribute — serve dinner at a homeless shelter, read books to the blind or help with kids at the children’s hospital.
Work less, play more
We aren’t suggesting that every mom stop working. However, you can strive for better time management so that you can work less and have more time to relax or play with your kids. Imagine how much more time you’d have to spend with your family if you could finish all your work at the office and never bring any of it home. Try to streamline your routines (and delegate some tasks if you can) at work and at home to reduce stress and cut back on your workload.

Be more adventurous
Life should be an adventure — don’t get caught in a rut. Explore your own city and the surrounding areas by taking your kids somewhere new every weekend. It doesn’t have to be somewhere expensive — a new park or a hiking trail can be a family adventure, too. Also, be more adventurous with your husband or partner. Make time for date night and be a little more daring in the bedroom. An active healthy sex life is good for you emotionally and physically.
