Young girls don’t have that many positive role models in the media today. With the emergence of Facebook and Twitter, girls have access to the “real lives” of young celebrities way too much. How can you keep their girl power up and positive? Wear it.
Wearing your girl power
I’m so excited to be starting this column, What I’m loving this week, because I have so many cool, trendy and special things that I’m oh-so-ready to share each week with other moms. I’ve been a blogger since 2005 and I have made it my business as a mom blogger to be
in-the-know about trending topics in the parenting and
motherhood arenas, so I’m super excited to have an outlet each week to dish.
As moms, we get so busy in our everyday lives with our family life, work life, home life and everything else that we take care of (you know grocery shopping, schedules, lunches, laundry, cleaning, etc.) that we don’t always have the time to just sit, relax and catch up on some in-the-now fabulous products and trends for ourselves and families. I want my column to give you a fun and exciting moment each week to catch up on some uber-cool trends in the parenting world.
So what do I have up first?
Girl power!
As a mom of 4 little boys, I don’t know what it’s like to actually be the mom of a little girl in this day and age, but (and this is a big but) I do have two nieces that are both 11 years old with whom I’m extremely close.
When I was their age, I looked up to girls like Candace Cameron from Full House and Alyssa Milano from Who’s the Boss? They were my role models. They were wholesome, positive and innocent young girls on TV and in the media.
Nowadays? Well, let’s just say there aren’t the best role models for our young girls. There are 17-year-olds marrying men in their 40s. There’s MTV’s 16 and Pregnant. There’s Twitter (who knows who they’re actually talking to). There’s Facebook. There’s bullying. There’s Lindsay Lohan. There’s just a lot of a lot of everything, and it’s not all positive, which is a problem. Let’s face it, our girls needs some positive girl power!
My feeling? Let them wear it!
Here are 5 fashionable items to inspire girls:
1.
Off Our Chests offer amazing, motivational and inspiring tees for girls.
I love them because they’re just the kind of tees with messages that you want your daughter wearing. Off Our Chests’ mission is to make the world a happier place. That’s a pretty remarkable mission to have, but what I love is that your daughter is wearing this message for all her friends to see.
2.
When I was a little girl I used to have my mom tape on a piece of fabric to my back and I would run around the house like I was Super Woman. Fast forward to today, you can find the most girly, feminine and inspiring capes for the little lady in your life. Lets’ show our girls that they can save the word, and even in style.
3.
Fashion Playtes is the place where your daughter can go and design and create her own special fashion tee.
I love Fashion Playtes because they give a little girl the creativity, the inspiration and the fashion-passion to create something meaningful. There’s pride in wearing something that you created, especially when the designs are so inspiring.
4.
Sweet Sparkles Heaven on Etsy has created the most inspirational jewelry for girls and women. I bought two of these necklaces for my nieces this past Christmas because I always want them to know how special, beautiful and unique they are. I love the simplicity in the message, but how powerful and inspiring it is for a young girl.
5.
Life is Good has taken on a whole new life (no pun intended) and meaning for young girls. They have taken their traditonal “Life is Good” message and totally fashionized it, which I love. I have always loved the “Life is Good” message because it’s simple, yet leaves such a lasting impression. It’s important for girls to know, embrace and love this life!
