5 Valentine’s date ideas when you don’t have a sitter

When it comes to having a date night, sometimes parents have to get creative — especially when said date night falls on a national holiday like Valentine’s Day and it’s impossible to get a sitter.

If your regular babysitter has her own plans and you’ve called everyone else on your list, maybe it’s time to embrace a quiet night at home instead. Read on for five ways to have a great Valentine’s Day with your spouse without ever leaving the house.

1

Candlelight dinner

When was the last time you had a candlelight dinner at home? (That time the power went out doesn’t count.) Just because you couldn’t make a reservation at the trendy restaurant downtown doesn’t mean your Valentine’s Day can’t be just as special. As parents it’s important to devote time to your marriage, whether you’re out on the town or right at home.

Tuck in the kids, pop open a bottle of bubbly and order in from the restaurant where you wanted to make a reservation. Lower the lights, burn some candles and watch as your regular ol’ dining room is transformed into a romantic dining spot.

2

Sexy game night

There’s nothing like a good old school game to bring out your playful side. Bust out Monopoly, Pictionary or even the kids’ Candy Land game. Then decide on some sexy prizes that the winner will receive (we’ll leave those details to you). You’ll marvel at how a simple game of Battleship can get so hot and heavy.

3

Movie marathon night

Have a movie night and watch the flicks that you enjoyed together before you were married. This will be a fun walk down memory lane as you think back on the early days of your courtship and remember those nights when you’d talk for hours on end. As you snuggle up on the couch, think about the time you’re spending together now and remember that just because you’re married doesn’t mean you can’t date each other. In fact, it’s all the more reason why you should date each other. Maybe you should press pause on that movie and, for old times sake, just talk.

4

Soak it up

A nice soak in the tub is just what the doctor ordered this Valentine’s Day. Because just like that candle light dinner, you might not be able to pinpoint the last time you took a bath, let alone a bath with your spouse. So make it a candlelight bath for two. Add some bubbles, turn on the music and light candles. Not only will you feel reinvigorated after, but you’ll be much better parents for it. Date nights are not only important for you and your spouse, but for your children too. When mama and daddy are happy, everyone’s happy.

5

Cook together

Cooking together can be a ton of fun. First, decide on what you’re going to make. An appetizer? An entree? A desert? All of the above? Then open a nice bottle of wine and let loose. Chat it up while you chop and flirt will you filet. Who knows, maybe the prep will be so much fun that you’ll never get to the actual cooking part– if you know what we mean.
