DIY Valentine’s Day gifts
Valentine’s Day is my all-time favorite holiday. I’m a total romantic at heart, so I love a day that honors and celebrates love. I’ve never been one to just give a Valentine’s Day gift to my Valentine. I’ve always celebrated the day, ever since I was a little girl, with my parents. Now that I’m older, I love sharing the day with my four little Valentines, too. They’re my loves and I feel it’s important for them to see their parents celebrating with each other and with them. I guess you can say I’m trying to raise little Casanovas!
When I was a little girl, my mother used to sit with my sister and me and help us create the most beautiful Valentine’s Day gifts for her and my father (she’d always act surprised on Valentine’s Day and pretend she didn’t actually see all the work going into our gift for her — a true mom).
I loved seeing the different gift ideas she’d come up with for us. We obviously didn’t have the money to go out and buy our own gifts at a young age, so we’d rely on our creativity and imagination. It may be 20 years later, but would you believe I still do the same thing every Valentine’s Day? The beauty for me now is that I get to do these special projects with my own sons.
I’ve been seeing so many spectacular Valentine’s Day gift ideas online lately that it has actually become difficult to choose what I’m going to make this year with the boys (I have finally narrowed it down). I needed to find projects that weren’t too tough for them, but also projects that I know they’ll thoroughly enjoy making. The trend right now is so heavily on crafting and creating, especially with the popularity of Etsy, so I’ve really become (borderline) obsessed with scouring around for some fabulous gift ideas!
5 Ways to create the perfect DIY Valentine’s Day Gifts:
Cards. I got this idea from the amazing Etsy shop, Sad Shop. I saw one of their cards on Pinterest that read “I like you like naps.” It made me laugh. So it got me thinking about how cool it would be for me to ask the boys for all the things they like (and love) about their dad.
Let me tell you, I got some incredible and unforgettable things. It seems they love their dad like Mario Brothers, XBOX, chocolate milk, Webkinz, grilled cheese, Mickey Mouse stickers, Indiana Jones, and more. The list went on and on. I’m going to create cards with the boys just like Sad Shop’s for my husband for Valentine’s Day.
Petal Hearts. I discovered this from the queen of crafts, Martha Stewart, but I am putting my own special twist on it. Martha suggests taking rose petals and sprinkling them in heart shapes around your house to surprise your love. My take on it? You and your kids take a canvas and literally hot glue petals in the shape of a heart on the canvas. I love the finished 3-D look of it, and it’s also special because your kids helped make it with you. You can also substitute petals with other things — old photos, candies, glitter, gems, etc.
Love words. I’m obsessed with finding really cool ways to incorporate words into a craft project. I’m a lover of inspirational and motivational words and phrases, so when I saw this idea on Sea Flower Studio blog, I immediately got an idea for Valentine’s Day.
Take a piece of poster board and draw a gigantic heart on it. Have your kids think of all different words and phrases that describe their dad or inspirational words that would describe him or motivate him. After that, all you have to do is glue all these words inside the heart. Easy, but so meaningful. I suggest framing it or laminating it. (Post your final product on Pinterest!)
Crayon hearts. Every mom has dozens (upon dozens) of half crayons laying around the house. Have you ever wondered what to do with them? You know, rather than tossing them? I have a great project for you that I found on Pink and Green Mama.
Take all of your half crayons and melt them into heart molds. Cute, right? You’ll need to purchase a heart shaped baking pan, but I promise — it’s worth it! Spray your pan with non-stick cooking spray and drop in your half crayons. Then bake at 250 degrees F for 15 minutes! These are the cutest things in the world! We made them last week and I’m in love with them.
More cards. I am absolutely obsessed with these fabulous cards for Valentine’s Day that I found on Instructables! I love these so much that I’m going to do these year-round. This may require you to work with your child one-on-one, but it’s so worth it.
Instructables literally walks you through the steps one by one, and my recommendation for you is once it’s done, frame it. Truly make it into a fabulous and wonderful Valentine’s Day gift that he can keep forever. My card for my husband would read our favorite song, “At Last…”
