Not sure how to entertain your kids today? Treasure hunts are a fun and easy way to get your kids thinking and keep them busy indoors or out for hours! Plus, a treasure hunt is always a fun activity to play on Easter with eggs, so you just might get some festive inspiration. Get started now by following these simple steps.
Step 1: Location, location, location
Choose a location for the treasure hunt, such as the front yard, back yard, inside of the house or the park. Location is key when planning a treasure hunt because you want to make sure it’s accessible, safe and somewhere your children won’t get lost. But you also want to be sure that it’s fun and unique!
Step 2: Pick the treasure
Decide on a “treasure” that they will find at the end of the hunt. This could be a toy, a movie, or anything else your child might like. If more than one child is participating, make sure there is a prize for each of them at the end (if it isn’t something that they can share, such as a movie). Having a fun surprise at the end will make the treasure hunt more enjoyable for your children.
Step 3: Leave clues
Using the space you have chosen for the treasure hunt, determine where you will hide the clues and how many clues you will leave. Hiding places might be under your child’s pillow, behind a tree or in a planter. You will start by giving them one clue at the beginning; each hidden clue thereafter will lead to the next. Get creative with your clues. The more clues you have for them, the more exciting the treasure hunt will be.
Step 4: Appropriate clues
The difficulty of the clues will depend on the age of the children. For younger children, have them look for certain colors or obvious objects. For older children, make the clues trickier, but not so difficult that they will be unable to solve them. For example, if you own a stationary bike, one of your clues might read: “Look underneath the bike that never moves.” Depending on whether it’s your own child or a group of children partaking, you may have to be more general with your clues than you would be if it was just your own child. Take this as an opportunity to have fun and bond with the kids!
