Fun craft projects to do on Family Day

When kids get a day off from school, they might just sit around in front of the TV all day. But that isn’t what Family Day is about. Have fun and be productive at the same time by taking on the challenge of a cool new craft this Feb. 18.

Folded-heart page marker

For kids who are old enough to experiment with origami, this adorable folded-heart page marker created by Clara at Bloomize is a great way to get started. She offers a step-by-step visual tutorial so kids won’t get frustrated as they learn the process. You and your little ones can have fun making different colourful page markers for all your friends and family, and maybe even move on to more complex origami patterns if you feel up to the challenge.

Scrap-fabric bracelets

We love the ingenius repurposing Rebecca at Blue Cricket Design did to create these pretty and fun bracelets. With a few strips of fabric and a batch of those cheap plastic bracelets one winds up collecting over time, Rebecca managed to turn old junk into stylish accessories. Throw in some stray buttons for added flair, and you and your daughter will have a whole new jewellery collection. Head over to Rebecca’s blog to check out her helpful tutorial.

T-shirt yarn braided coasters

Upcycling old things you no longer need is an excellent way to spend Family Day with your kids. And Carolyn at Homework came up with the ultimate in upcycling when she created these T-shirt yarn braided coasters. Virtually every house has an abundance of old T-shirts gathering dust, and with this easy craft, you can turn that clutter into stylish new decor pieces!

Pine cone owls

It’s a little cold out to be visiting the zoo on Family Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create your own little animal creatures at home. These pine cone owls made by Amanda at Crafts by Amanda are easy to put together. And as a bonus activity, you can bundle up and head out for a walk to find all the pine cones and acorns you’ll need (a quick and budget-friendly trip to your local dollar store is another way to snag all the materials required). Your kids will have a blast customizing their owls just how they want them!

Made with love road rug

Forget about generic, plastic Hot Wheels tracks. Thanks to Nicolette at How Does She?, you and your kids can work together to make their very own, personalized road rug. She offers a helpful step-by-step picture tutorial of how to do everything, from painting the roads to creating a miniature zoo. Your youngest ones can help out planning where everything should go, and older kids can get involved in all the cutting and painting. Not only is this a fun craft to work on together, but this convenient, travel-friendly rug will provide your little ones with hours of playtime no matter where life takes you.

Rice Krispies treat flower pops

If your kids need a little extra motivation to get into the crafting spirit, look no further than these Rice Krispies treat flower pops made by Amy at Positively Splendid. These scrumptious flower treats are part craft, part yummy snack — what more could kids ask for? They’ll make great gifts for friends and family, and Amy even offers free printables to give them a beautiful, high-quality look.
