4 Kids’ books for World Book Day

World Book Day is an international celebration of reading, and what better way to show your appreciation than by diving into a new book with your child? Here are our top four picks of brand new releases that are bound to make your young bookworms beg for more.

Destiny, Rewritten by Kathryn Fitzmaurice

Destiny, Rewritten is a great book! Emily Dickinson’s mom is convinced it’s her daughter’s calling to be a poet. She named her after a famous poet and everything. Unfortunately Emily has other plans. She hates poetry, and she can’t bring herself to break it to her mom. When Emily loses the copy of Emily Dickinson’s poems that she was given when she was born, she discovers the book actually contains something really important. She and her crew of quirky friends set out to find the book and to reconcile who Emily wants to be and who she’s destined to be. Fun characters and funny banter make for a charming story that will empower young girls to create their own life’s path.

Big Nate Flips Out by Lincoln Peirce

In the fifth book of the New York Times bestselling Big Nate series, readers get another glimpse into the mayhem-filled life of 11-year-old Nate Wright. An aspiring comic artist and self-proclaimed “renaissance man” of sixth grade, Nate fills his days with zany pranks, pestering his dad and older sister and creating comic masterpieces to document it all. When Nate’s behaviour lands his best friend in some serious trouble, he might have to turn over a new leaf. Nate narrates his antics with a unique lingo kids his age will relate to, and his black-and-white comics illustrate every page. If your child is into graphic novels, they’ll love this.

Hokey Pokey by Jerry Spinelli

Kids reign supreme in the magical universe of Hokey Pokey, an adult-free paradise where dessert is for lunch, cartoons are unlimited and herds of bikes flood the streets. When big-kid Jack gets his beloved bike stolen one day, his whole world turns upside down. To make matters worse, Jack knows a girl stole it. He has an identity crisis. He doesn’t feel like himself. He starts to hear the whistle of a train in the distance, even though he knows trains don’t exist in Hokey Pokey. What’s going on? Is the train coming to take him away? This magic-filled story of growing up and leaving things behind is a sweet adventure.

The Worm Whisperer by Betty Hicks

This sweet, feel-good story follows Ellis Coffey in his quest to win his county’s annual Woolly Worm Race. Driving him is the grand prize money, which is the exact amount to cover his Dad’s back surgery. Ellis thinks he’s got a good shot at winning because he has a secret weapon: He’s found a caterpillar that can follow his directions. If Ellis can manage to train his crawly friend to become the fastest in the county, his family’s financial problems will be solved. This mellow read teaches the importance of hard work and love.
