Think Like a Man took home top honors at the weekend box office for a second week in a row, while the Jason Segel and Emily Blunt comedy The Five-Year Engagement underwhelmed. Has director Judd Apatow lost his touch?
Apparently moviegoers weren’t in the mood for a romantic comedy this weekend, judging from ticket sales from Friday to Sunday. The Jason Segel and Emily Blunt comedy The Five-Year Engagement took fifth place with $11.2 million in ticket sales. The film’s studio, Universal, said it expected the low debut, but it was surprising given that the director was Judd Apatow. Maybe it’ll be a slow burn to the top? We hope so, because it’s not your typical romantic comedy.
“I have always felt like most romantic comedies are incredibly predictable,” Segel told SheKnows about the comedy’s will-they-or-won’t-they plot. “You look at the poster, and you know, well, those two are ending up together at the end of the movie. But there’s a legitimate section of [The Five-Year Engagement] where you’re not sure if Tom and Violet are going to be together. You’re not sure anything’s going to work.”

Think Like a Man managed to keep its perch atop the box office with $18 million in sales. The comedy — based on comedian Steve Harvey’s advice book by the same name — took in an average of $8,933 per theatre.
Coming in at number two was the stop-action animated film The Pirates! Band of Misfits. The movie — already in wide release overseas — brought in $11.4 million, bringing the film to about $75 million worldwide. Not too bad for an animated film without a lot of buzz in the states.
Third and fourth place went to the Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling romance, The Lucky One, and The Hunger Games, respectively. The Lucky One dropped 50 percent in its second weekend in theaters, hauling in about $11.3 million. The Hunger Games also earned in the ballpark of $11.3 million, bringing its worldwide haul to a staggering $601 million in less than two months. Here’s hoping star Jennifer Lawrence is renegotiating her salary for the second film in the trilogy, Catching Fire.
