Sensory Processing Disorder: Every family has a story

AJ, 9

Marcie Pickelsimer is currently a SAHM to two boys. AJ (9) was adopted from Russia in 2005 and Gus (4) was adopted from Guatemala in 2008.

AJ is labeled as a hyper- and hypo-sensitive child and this causes great confusion for everyone because one never knows what causes him to be overstimulated or understimulated. Because of this our family plans for everything. We bring headphones and his bear hug vest to outings, make sure he has his comfort items (fidgets), plan for soft, chewy, and crunchy foods at all meals, use weighted blankets at night, sign him up for heavy work activities like swimming and bowling, and make sure his IEP and teachers are on track all the time. SPD is all consuming for our family and our child and because of our son’s multiple special needs it always will be all consuming. But, because of his needs I will be a better mom and better teacher.
