Howie, 6
Alysia Butler is a stay-at-home mom to three boys. She writes a personal blog at Try Defying Gravity and is the managing editor of the SPD Blogger Network.
Howie’s sensory sensitivities are a factor in everything that we do as a family. There are certain activities we can and cannot do together. But we’ve also become much more understanding and aware of others and their sensory issues too. I think our heightened awareness has made his brothers better siblings, and it’s certainly made us better parents and advocates. Because we understand Howie’s SPD, we have been able to educate his teachers and our friends.
There are so many days when I just want to take away the pain and hurt he feels from the sensory assaults on his body. But he has the most incredible spirit and love of life and I wouldn’t change that for the world.
