Labor Day weekend is a fun time to get together with friends and family to have some fun in the sun before the end of summer. If you don’t have plans yet, consider these family activities for Labor Day.
Head to the park
Get outdoors for Labor Day. The weather is still warm in most areas of the country and it may be your last time to enjoy some outdoor fun before the cool fall temperatures arrive. Spend the day at the park, beach or lake with your kids. You can go just for the day or make a weekend of it with a Labor Day weekend camping trip.
Give a history lesson
Teach your kids a little about the history and meaning of Labor Day. As you probably know, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September each year. The holiday celebrates the contributions of workers in our country. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 and is often celebrated with street parades, firework displays and other family activities. Many people host barbecues, attend picnics or get away for the weekend as Labor Day unofficially marks the end of summer.
Create Labor Day crafts
Any holiday is an excuse to make some crafts with your kids. Craft time is terrific for bonding and it can help enhance your children’s fine motor skills, imaginations and creativity. Sit down with your little ones and create Labor Day thank you cards, Labor Day puppets or a number of other Labor Day crafts for kids.
Host a barbecue
You don’t need to leave your own backyard to have fun on Labor Day. Invite friends, family and neighbors for a barbecue. Cut down on the cost and time involved by making it a potluck. Try some of these Labor Day recipes, including kid-friendly BBQ on a stick and yummy, chunky guacamole.
Play outdoor games
Even if you don’t have a swimming pool, your kids can enjoy some water fun with these water toys on Labor Day. Also, try some other unique backyard games like backyard bowling. Simply use two-liter bottles for your pins and any type of ball you have on hand — from basketball balls to tennis balls.
Go to your local theme park
If you don’t want to host a Labor Day party yourself, take a trip to your local amusement park. Many theme parks and other attractions hold special parades, fireworks shows, festivals and other events for the holiday. Even if they don’t have anything in particular happening for Labor Day, your kids will love one last trip to the amusement or water park before they become immersed in school again.
