Chasing the Dream: Organizing your life to reach your dreams

Lacking organization makes life harder, pure and simple. From managing homework and schedules to keeping your business in order, it’s key to be organized so that you have time for your family — and your dreams.
Maraya Pearson, author of The Home CEO’s Guide to Life: How to Live in Harmony, Health and Happiness, offers tips and ideas to better organize your life.

Are you organized? Like really organized? We aren’t just talking your bathroom medicine cabinet, we are talking about your mind and feelings too.

Maraya Pearson, author of The Home CEO’s Guide to Life, says that life organization brings the clarity necessary to succeed. “The No. 1 benefit to being organized with your life is that it makes life happier and you feel more fulfilled and you’re more confident,” says Pearson.

“We only have one life to live and if we want to live our life to the fullest, we have to set out for the way we want to live,” says Pearson.

Pearson, who worked long hours as a project manager, realized she needed a more organized life when she found herself regularly working past midnight once a week and often showering at 11 pm. “I really wasn’t organized with my life because I really hadn’t made some decisions about what do I want to do with my life,” she admits.

What are your priorities?

Ready to get organized? Pearson says to start with your priorities. Write one page about them, and make sure they answer important questions like “Who do you identify with?” and “What things can you say with confidence?”

Also, make sure you set four goals per year and go after them. She suggests choosing one each in personal, professional, health and other and write them down. This gives you something tangible to identify with.

Time/life management

How’s your time management? If you are stressed out and feeling like you aren’t getting much done, then you probably need to work on it. “Time has to be aligned with what your priorities are,” says Pearson.

And what about your house? Keeping that organized matters too. Pearson suggests taking a systamatic approach to it. “On the household management organization, what’s also really helpful is having a day for each task — one day for laundry, one day for errands, one day for meals, etc.,” she advises.

What you need to know about relationships

What do relationships have to do with organization? Everything! “I think that in an organized life you are spending time on things that are worthwhile so don’t waste time on people who are an energy drain. Really set boundaries,” says Pearson. “Some relational issues can cause mental clutter, so just eliminating that is a big deal.”

Instead, invest in good relationships, says Pearson.
