Looking for craft ideas, but don’t have a ton of extra money to spend on supplies? There are plenty of ways to get creative at home this winter without breaking the bank.
Cabin fever may strike at any time — especially in the winter — and moms and kids are equally affected. If it’s too cold or snowy to go outside, you may be looking for crafty ideas to help your kids stay busy and entertained. The good news is that it doesn’t cost a lot to be creative at home.
Paper towel roll log cabin
Start saving your paper towel tubes because you’ll definitely want to create this totally awesome log cabin from TPcraft.com out of your stash. Glue, scissors, heavyweight brown paper, and 21 paper towel rolls are what you need to get started — that, a kid or two, and you’ll have a delightful afternoon of creativity.
Oatmeal container game
Endless fun can be had with a simple, decorated oatmeal container, a handful of straws and a little creativity. Merriment Design shows us how to create a beautifully-decorated oatmeal container and turn it into the best toddler game that you’ve ever seen — right in the comfort of your own home.
Cardboard mailbox
Cardboard is an excellent reusable artistic material. It brings packages to our home or encloses purchases we have made. It can be broken down and stored in a very small space until needed. From the ikatbag blog we see how this clever mommy created a rather fancy mailbox for her kids out of a cardboard box that formerly contained disposable diapers. Masking tape, good-quality scissors and a little bit of time is all you need, plus a few kids with markers or stickers for decorative purposes.
Cardboard puppet stage
The ikatbag blog features another really awesome craft idea using cardboard (as well as several others — you should really check it out). Here, she fashions a stage using two different boxes — one as a stand and the other as a stage. Curtains are made from fabric and hung on a simple rod with rings. (Use an old bed sheet, receiving blankets or clothes you don’t wear any more for the curtains!)
Road trip travel trays
Even though these are designed for a road trip, they can totally be used indoors on a rainy (or snowy) day. And the possibilities are endless. Chalkboard spray-painted cookie sheets from the Dollar Store become terrific playthings — they are magnetic and your kids can draw on them with chalk. Genius! Thank the mama from Somewhat Simple for this fabulous idea.
