Get creative with nature

This kid-friendly craft — creating a leaf-silhouette art piece — is fun to do and simple enough for even the smallest of hands to help complete.

Leaves and flower petals become the star of the show in this project. Your kiddos will be amazed when you peel off the flower petals to reveal bright, fun leaf shapes hiding underneath. Adding their initial makes this a special keepsake they will be excited to create.

Supplies:

  • Canvas
  • Wooden letter
  • Acrylic paint and paint brush
  • Glue
  • Spray paint
  • Spray adhesive
  • Leaves and flowers, in varying shapes and sizes
  • Permanent marker
  • Hot glue and glue gun

Instructions:

1

Create a base color

Using a bright or vibrant acrylic paint color, paint your canvas a solid color. This will be the color that ultimately becomes the leaves and flowers.

2

Place your leaves and flower petals

Once the base coat is completely dry, carefully — and temporarily — affix your leaves and flowers to your canvas using a light coating of the spray adhesive on just the leaves and flowers, not on the canvas. Lightly press onto the canvas.

3

Spray paint the canvas

Once the foliage is attached, coat the entire thing in a contrasting color of spray paint. When the spray paint is completely dry, carefully peel off the leaves and flowers, revealing the bright paint underneath, and discard them.

4

Trace and define

To add a pop of definition, outline these shapes using a permanent marker, as shown. Let your inner graffiti artist fly.

5

Paint and affix the initial

Now, paint your letter using a complementary acrylic paint color and let dry. Affix to canvas using a generous amount of hot glue.
