As Easter approaches, it can be easy for kids to get swept up in excitement over the Easter Bunny and candy treats. On Good Friday, take time to help kids remember the true meaning of the holiday with this beautiful cross sun catcher.
Hang this pretty sun catcher in the window to serve as a reminder for the real reason why we celebrate Easter.
What you’ll need:
- wax paper
- construction paper
- crayons
- scissors
- hole punch
- string
- tape
- marker
- iron
- ironing board
- towel
What you’ll do:
Start by taking the paper wrapper off of each of the crayons. Use your scissors to shave off small pieces from the crayon. Keep shaving until you have a small pile of crayon pieces.
Lay a piece of wax paper out flat on the ironing board. Sprinkle the crayon shavings on top of the wax paper in a thin, even layer.
Lay a second piece of wax paper over the crayon shavings, then lay a towel on top of the wax paper. Heat your iron to high and run the iron over the towel to melt the wax shavings. Do not let your iron come into contact with the wax paper.
Remove the towel and let the wax cool completely, then use the marker to draw a cross on the wax paper, then cut out the cross.
Trace the outline of the cross on the construction paper.
Cut out around the outline, approximately 1/2-inch away from the line.
Cut out the center of the cross from the construction paper, then tape the wax paper cross to the back of the construction paper cross.
Use the hole punch to make a hole at the top of the cross. Cut a piece of string, feed it through the hole and tie a knot in it to make a hanger for the cross, then use a piece of tape to hang the cross in the window.
