Colorful crafts for Cinco de Mayo
What’s more fun than celebrating Cinco de Mayo with homemade piñata cookies? How about celebrating with piñata cookies and these great piñata cookie-inspired crafts for kids!
Piñata-inspired maracas
What you’ll need:
- balloons
- newspaper
- bowl
- flour
- whisk
- dry beans
- toilet paper tubes
- scissors
- bright colored tissue paper
- glue
- tape
What you’ll do:
- Inflate two balloons so that they are the same size.
- Cut the newspaper into long strips that are 1-inch wide.
- In a bowl, whisk together 2 parts flour with 1 part water.
- Dip the paper strips in the flour mixture. Lay the paper strips over the balloons alternating directions until the entire balloon is covered. Set the balloons aside to dry.
- Once the paper has dried, pop the balloon and remove it. Fill the maraca with a handful of beans and tape the opening closed to keep the beans inside.
- Use tape to attach a paper tube to the bottom of the maraca.
- Cut the tissue paper into 1-inch strips. Use your scissors to cut slits along one side of the tissue paper to create fringe.
- Starting at the bottom, glue the tissue paper strips to the maraca. Keep adding strips to the maraca, alternating colors, until the entire maraca is covered.
- Repeat steps 5-8 for the second maraca.
Colorful sombreros
What you’ll need:
- Child size sombreros
- wide ribbon
- narrow ribbon
- jumbo ric rac
- pom pom fringe
- measuring tape
- glue
- scissors
What you’ll do:
- Measure around the base of the middle of the hat, and also around the brim of the hat. Write down your measurements.
- Cut a piece of wide ribbon that is long enough to wrap around the center of the hat, and glue it to the hat.
- Cut a piece of narrow ribbon and jumbo ric rac and glue them in place over the wide ribbon.
- Cut a piece of pom pom fringe that is long enough to wrap around the brim of the hat. Glue the pom pom fringe to the brim of the hat.
- Once the glue is dry, your sombrero is ready to wear!
