You need not be a frosting expert to successfully recreate this stunning cupcake bouquet. The secret is in the flower petals, which are simple to create with marshmallows and colored sugar. Even the novice baker can realize beautiful results using this genius method.
Mom will delight at receiving a Mother’s Day gift that is both beautiful and delicious. You could even get the kids involved in helping to create this tasty treat!
Supplies needed:
- 1 terra-cotta pot
- 4-inch round Styrofoam ball
- Wilton flower-shaped paper baking cups
- Prepared cupcake batter
- Frosting
- 3 cups small marshmallows (approximately 21 whole marshmallows per cupcake)
- Colored sugar sprinkles
- 36 pieces Good & Plenty candy
- Toothpicks
- Green tissue paper
Instructions:
Bake the cupcakes
Using whatever recipe or boxed mix desired, bake a batch of 12 standard-sized cupcakes. Let cool completely before frosting.
Create the flower design
Using your favorite recipe, mix up a batch of frosting. Plain white works best for blending in with the marshmallows. Now, to create your marshmallow ‘petals,’ first pour 2 tablespoons each of various colors of colored sugar onto saucers. Then, begin by cutting each marshmallow in half, diagonally, with kitchen shears. Once each marshmallow is cut in half, immediately dip the cut area into the desired color of sugar — the cut edge will be sticky. Each cupcake is going to require approximately 42 petals (21 whole marshmallows). For reference, I made four pink, four blue, two orange and two yellow flowers.
Once you have created enough flower petals to cover each of your cupcakes, you are ready to attach them. Start by frosting each cupcake, one at a time, in a thick layer of frosting. Immediately after frosting each cupcake, add the flower petals, starting with a single ring along the outside edge, as shown. Then create another ring of petals slightly overlapping. Finally, add the third and last ring, overlapping again.
There should be a small area in the middle where the frosting shows through. Insert two Good & Plenty candies here to create the ‘stamen’ of the flower. Repeat until all cupcakes are frosted and covered in petals.
Create the flower pot base
To create the flower base, insert the Styrofoam ball into the terra-cotta pot. You may want to use glue to secure the ball if you have any concerns of the ball shifting in the pot. If you get it nice and wedged in, you probably don’t have to use glue.
Attach the cupcakes
To attach the cupcakes, start at the top of the Styrofoam ball and insert a toothpick in halfway. Using another toothpick, create a guide hole in your cupcake through the paper cup. Then, insert the cupcake onto the toothpick. Repeat with the remaining cupcake, laying them out so that they cover the ball as much as possible. Make sure to insert the toothpicks that are on the side of the bouquet in an upward 45-degreee angle, so that the cupcakes won’t just fall off.
Fill in the blank spaces
Once you have attached all of your cupcakes, fill in any of the places where the ball is visible with green tissue paper squares.
