Free family activities in Northern California

TAHOE area

Taylor Creek Lake Tahoe Visitor Center, South Lake Tahoe

Whether you go for the sun and sand, to picnic, or to learn about the local environment, the Taylor Creek Lake Tahoe Visitor Center offers trails, exhibits, and plenty of outdoor activities. Families can sign up for ranger-led walks or partake in the daily children’s program, Woodsey Rangers.

Great for families with strollers, the paths are paved or hard packed for easy maneuvering along the 1/2 mile Rainbow Trail, including the Stream Profile Chamber giving visitors a peek at a cross section filled with live wildlife. For more serious hikers, a four-hour, five-mile hike loop offers views from the summit of Mount Tallac. In the fall, visitors can witness the salmon swimming up Taylor Creek from Lake Tahoe for an awe-inspiring show, courtesy of Mother Nature.
