Best weekend trips for families in Canada

While there are simply endless options for awesome weekends away in Canada, we’ve made a few great suggestions for happening destinations that aren’t too far from the major cities of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Happy travels!

Niagara Falls, Ontario

It’s exciting enough to stand beside the roaring falls, but you can also ride the Maid of the Mist for a real thrill. Aside from the spectacle of the falls themselves, Niagara is chock full of fun for families. There are regular museums (and wax museums!), Ripley’s Believe It or Not, endless activities, seasonal festivals, great shopping, and fun family accommodations featuring indoor water slides and more!

Mont Tremblant, Quebec

An extremely popular weekend destination for families who are fans of sporting and the outdoors, Mont Tremblant is essentially a ski and snowboard resort, but offers year-round activities and great accommodations. Best of all, it’s only a two-hour drive into the big city of Montreal, which offers up an array of family-friendly options suitable for a day-trip!

Manitoulin Island, Ontario

Not only will your family be visiting the world’s largest freshwater island, and the site of the first European settlement, but they will also be experiencing the real beauty of the outdoors in this Northern Ontario destination. On Manitoulin Island, native life blends with European history, meaning there are some very interesting sights, museums, and educational activities to be enjoyed. The recreational options are excellent all year long too!

Whistler, British Columbia

Only two-hours from Vancouver, Whistler is a resort that operates during all four seasons! Outwardly, it has the appearance of a quaint, alpine village, but it’s got plenty of impressive amenities and options to offer. Some of the activities available for families outside of the winter skiing and snowboarding are golf, hiking, gondola rides – even ziplining! Whistler is famous for playing host to some fabulous festivals as well, and was the site of the Nordic events in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games!

Ottawa, Ontario

Ottawa is an extremely family-friendly city that is just bursting to the seams with activities to enjoy! Whether you are interested in tours, walks, and outdoor pursuits, or prefer to peruse museums and art galleries, you won’t be disappointed. The canal offers opportunities for skating or boating depending on the season, and there are oodles of museums to choose from, as well as an inner-city farm, and a permanent market! Numerous festivals call the city home too. http://www.ottawa.ca/visitors/index_en.html
