Sanborn Western Camps, Colorado

Check out this mountainous camp experience in the heart of the Rockies.

Sanborn Western Camps, Colorado

At this camp, their mission is to live together in the outdoors, building a sense of self, a sense of community, a sense of the earth and a sense of wonder through fun and adventure. Located on 6,000 acres of Aspen, spruce, Douglas-fir, and Ponderosa pine-filled forests, an hour west of Colorado Springs. In this environment, their campers learn, grow, and increase their self-efficacy as they camp, backpack, ride horses, hike, laugh, make life-long friends and learn to appreciate and enjoy the natural world.

What we love:

Beyond the physical space, their campers have the unique opportunity to choose all of their trips and program activities. These include: digging for 67 million year old fossils, rock climbing on the best granite in the county, tubing down the South Platte River, sleeping under millions of stars (and regularly meteorites) and climbing one of the twenty-eight 14,000 foot peaks they have outfitter guide permits to climb (the most in the US).

Campers can also pitch their own tent on a “lone vigil” solo overnight, fly-fish, see giant herds of elk from the saddle of your horse, play Native American games at our replica Ute tribal village, eat gourmet meals on the trail (and in camp!), make Andy Goldsworthy-style art creations, swim and slide in our heated pools and learn to pack a horse for a pack trip.

Campers can also visit their interactive science center, build on their camping skills through their progression of trips for each age group, make candles at an original homestead cabin located on the property, earn upwards of 50 hours of community service on one of our SOLE (Sanborn Outdoor Leadership Experience) or CORE (Community OutReach Experience) trips, participate in their Gymkhana rodeo, watch the sunset from a rocky bluff, watch the sunrise from the flank of a mountain, play Schmerltz (the World’s Greatest Game) and, most importantly, just be a kid.

Parent perks:

Children who spend time outdoors truly are happier, healthier, and smarter. They have seen countless children with social or emotional skills deficits flourish at camp and at home with the friendship skills they learn at camp. Children gain independence, self-worth, and a true sense of wonder at Sanborn Camps.
