Phoenix-area zoos

In the Phoenix metro area, there are not just one but two great zoos — allowing you and your family to meet more than 7000 different animals and other creatures. Here’s where you can go get a little wild!

Zoos in the Phoenix area

Phoenix Zoo

Just up the road from the Desert Botanical Garden and the Hall of Flame Fire Museum, The Phoenix Zoo is one of the nation’s largest non-profit zoological parks, and has been named one of the top five best zoos for children and families. In fact, more than 1.5 million visitor come through the park each year, including 160,000 children on field trips.

In addition to more than 1,300 animals (including many endangered and threatened species), there’s much to explore every day at the Zoo — including keeper talks, live animal encounter shows and more. There are many exciting events at the Phoenix Zoo, including Rock the Zoo (formerly known as ZooBrew) and ZooLights.

Also look on their site for other special events, such as Twilight Camp (no, not related to the movie), where kids 5 and up — with a grown-up — can enjoy an outdoor adventure featuring hands-on fun, animal encounters, night hikes and more. You can even hold a birthday party (or a wedding) right there at the zoo! Kids under age 12 should also join the zoo’s Birthday Club — which will give them a free admission in their birthday month, plus some other goodies.
