If you are in the Houston area, travel down to Galveston Island to celebrate the holiday season with the Dickens on The Strand festival. What began as a potluck supper decades ago has turned into one of the most popular holiday festivals in the country.
About Dickens on The Strand
Dickens on The Strand began in 1974 with a goal to raise awareness about the possible demolition of some of The Strand’s historic buildings, which are now a National Historic Landmark District. Located about an hour south of downtown Houston, this annual family festival features entertaining parades, strolling carolers, roving street musicians, hand bell concerts, bagpipers, costumed vendors and much more.
Dickens on The Strand takes you on a festive journey through history. The festival features all the pomp and pageantry of 19th Century England as Victorian London of Charles Dickens is recreated for the entire weekend. Characters from Dickens’ novels walk the streets and visitors have the opportunity to purchase Victorian inspired food, crafts, clothing, jewelry and other items.
The 38th Annual Dickens on The Strand festival takes place Dec. 3 through Dec. 4, 2011. Your kids will love the enchanting characters, unusual vendors, dazzling parades and non-stop entertainment. Tickets are priced at $14 for adults and $8 for children ages 7-12. Kids age 6 and younger are admitted free. You can get a $2 discount for buying your tickets in advance, or a half-price discount for coming to the festival dressed in Victorian-era costumes.
