Festivals and family events in Kansas

Adults and kids of all ages can enjoy a number of fun-filled festivals, fairs and family events across the state of Kansas. Here are just a few of our favorite events your family will love.

Wichita River Festival

Wichita River Festival (Riverfest) features over 60 events — including festival food, kids’ activities, musical performances, river events, sporting events and a spectacular fireworks show. Riverfest has been taking place in Wichita for over 40 years, and hundreds of thousands of people come out annually. The best part of Riverfest — it’s just $5. The festival takes place over nine days at the end of May or beginning of June each year.

Katy Days

Katy Days is an annual festival that takes place over Memorial Day weekend in Parsons, Kansas each year. The festival features a spectacular array of activities and events for families, from the model railroad show to the bluebonnet banquet and the horseshoe tournament to the petting zoo. Katy Days also features music performances, a parade, a 5K run, a quilting competition and more. You can hang out in the Beer Garden where you can eat amazing food and listen to good music, or watch your kids jump and play in/on the inflatables, trampolines and other rides.

Central Kansas Free Fair

Every August the Central Kansas Free Fair takes place in Abilene, Kansas. A hot spot for families, the fair and festival features animal exhibits, baking contests, a carnival, a derby race, livestock shows, live entertainment, a parade, a rodeo and much more. Located at Eisenhower Park Fairground, this fair can get pretty crowded on the weekend. So try to go early in the day or during the week.

Kansas City Renaissance Festival

The Kansas City Renaissance Festival takes place over seven themed weekends at 20 entertainment venues starting on Labor Day each year. There’s so much to do and see at the renaissance festival that you’ll want to come back every weekend. The festival has over 16 stages of music and entertainment, over 140 artisan booths, food, drinks, shopping and more. Though everything is fun at this renaissance festival, one of the most popular events is the live armored jousting!

Kansas State Fair

For 100 years, Kansas visitors and residents alike have enjoyed the Kansas State Fair. The fair, which starts the Friday after Labor Day and lasts for 10 days, attracts over 350,000 people annually. From the livestock show to the carnival games and food booths to concerts, there’s plenty for kids and adults to do and see at the fair.
