The hotels and casinos are a magnet for tourists, but savvy locals have discovered the extras: free shows where the public is welcome, and plenty of amazing sites to see.
The Silverton Hotel has a striking 117,000 gallon saltwater aquarium the kids will enjoy, and the luxurious Bellagio’s Conservatory is a wonder to explore. Crafted by a team of over 100 horticulturalists, this conservatory features elaborate arrangements of plants and flowers in a bright and airy atrium. Every evening a water and music show plays repeatedly in the spectacular fountains filling the quarter-mile long lake in front of the Bellagio. The view is free and it’s a magical site with the water shooting up to 240 feet into the air. The wildlife habitat at the Flamingo Hotel is home to the pink birds the hotel is named for… kids enjoy seeing them up close and personal! Starting at dusk, the volcano at the Mirage Hotel explodes every 15 minutes. Your kids will be watching with anticipation for the big bang! Step inside the Mirage lobby to discover their 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium filled with sharks, stingrays, eels and other exotic deep-sea creatures. The lobby also has an atrium rain forest surrounded by tropical palms and plants, birds of paradise and a refreshing surprise with the waterfall. A kid-favorite is the live circus show at Circus Circus where children giggle through a 10-minute circus act that includes clowns, trapeze artists, aerialists and jugglers — every day starting at 11 a.m. with performances continuing until midnight.
Chocolaty fun for kids and those parents with a sweet tooth is found with a visit to M&M’s World, a place packed with every imaginable M&M souvenir, from guitars to purses — all crafted from the bite-sized treats. Entrance is free and you’ll get a sweet sample, but it’s hard to resist making a purchase here! More yummy fun is waiting in nearby Henderson at the Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Cactus Gardens. Watch them make the candy and nibble on samples during the tour, then stroll in the three-acre garden with hundreds of cactus plants of various varieties.
The Neon Museum is quirky enough to intrigue kids and their parents. This open-air museum was created by the city to preserve the neon signs that are part of the history of the area.
Short but spectacular shows are playing nightly at the Fremont Street Experience on the largest projection screen in the world: it’s the size of five football fields! Strobe lights, robotic mirrors and literally millions of LED lamps create the magic that makes these shows unforgettable.
