Why spend a ton of money to travel to Australia when we have the best they have to offer right here?
Kentucky Down Under
Spend the afternoon at Kentucky Down Under and you’ll forget you’re in Kentucky and think you’re in the Outback!
This small, privately owned Australian farm gives your kids a chance to get up close and personal with some animals they’ve probably never been around. They’ll get to pet kangaroos, wallabies, emus and lories. You may even have a cockatoo or parakeet land on your head!
There are also reptiles and camels, but you can’t always get so close to those.
There are sheep in the barn, and if you get there at the right time you may be able to watch the handlers shear them. If you plan on seeing this, prepare your kids beforehand — it seems like the handlers are being too rough with the sheep, but they’re not. Young children can be startled by this, thinking it’s unkind to the animals.
Once you’re done with the animals, you’ll have the chance to sift for gems and tour a cave. If you plan on taking the cave tour, bring a flashlight. Some of the areas aren’t that well lit, and you’ll be grateful to have it if you want a closer look at something.
