Living Planet Aquarium
Upon arriving at the Living Planet Aquarium, start in the Discover Utah section. This section will teach you all about the fish and other water life that live in Utah’s lakes and streams. Step aboard a boat and watch the simulator demonstrate what it’s like to boat on the Great Salt Lake. Learn fun facts about Lake Bonneville, the prehistoric lake that once covered most of Utah. Trout, frogs and other fish and water animals native to Utah are in tanks in this section of the aquarium.
River otters are a new exhibit at the Living Planet Aquarium, and can be found in the Discover Utah zone. Because they are an endangered species in Utah, the river otters are protected by the Utah Wildlife Code.
After learning all about Utah water animals, step into the Ocean Explorer Zone. Don’t be frightened by the dark, glowing room; step further inside and discover fluorescent jellyfish swimming about in surrounding tanks. Make your way around to the large octopus and admire its tentacles and large eyes. Sea fish, including clown fish and star fish, are found in this area. Stand in front of the large shark tank and watch them swim right up to you with only a (thick) pane of glass separating you.
The Splash Zone is located in the Ocean Explorer Zone, and this is where you get the chance to touch and pet a stingray. Other small creatures are in smaller tanks and available to touch and feel.
Journey to South America is a favorite zone with penguins, electric eels and piranhas. The penguin exhibit is eye level to the top of the water, so you are able to watch the penguins above water, splash into the water and swim around underwater.
