Since recently undergoing an extensive renovation, the Children’s Museum of Virginia has come back bigger and better than ever. This two-story museum features more 15 interactive exhibits through which children of all ages can explore — and learn (shhh…don’t tell them!).

On the first floor, guests will be wowed by the train room, an impressive display of both stationary and moving antique trains and toys. You could spend all day just watching the trains chug along, but be sure to move on because there’s so much more to see. Little ones will enjoy playing grown-up by shopping in the kid-size supermarket, putting on their stethoscopes to check out stuffed dogs in the veterinary office, boarding and/or driving a scaled-down bus and even putting out imaginary fires or riding on a fire truck. This is also where you will find what many consider to be the highlight of a visit: the bubbles and especially the opportunity to build a bubble around yourself.
The second story houses a creative arts area where children can explore different mediums to create their own masterpieces. There is also an area where children can experiment with forces and energy by blowing balls around, testing out ramps and pulling on an elephant. Finally, there is a Backyard and Beyond area designed to expose children to key environmentalism concepts.
Families with small children will be happy to know there is a special toddler-friendly area of the museum designed especially for those under 3 to explore.
With so much to do, you could and should make a day of visiting the Children’s Museum of Virginia, especially now that they have opened their own café on site.
